2024 Research Scholar Program
January 1st, 2024 to December 31st, 2024
TFI is pleased to announce our 2024 Research Scholar Program. The Research Scholar Program aims to identify promising young researchers and engage them in high-impact collaborations during 2024.
We are seeking participants interested in our two core focus areas:
Foresight
- Those with interests in crisis management, scenario analysis, and strategic gaming are encouraged to apply. Additionally, generalists and those interested in conducting traditional research on foresight-relevant or policy-relevant topics are encouraged to apply.
Structural AI Risks
- Those with interests related to structural AI risks, a neglected class of AI risks. Foresight and forecasting techniques can be helpful for assessing and evaluating structural AI risks, and those with an interest in this area are especially encouraged to apply.
Those selected to join our Research Scholar program will be paired with one of our senior researchers for 2024 to collaborate on a research project. This is an unpaid position, and will require no hourly commitment, but will provide selected individuals an opportunity to gain valuable experience doing impactful research on topics related to AI, risk evaluations, and societal-scale risks. Our Research Scholar Program is demonstrative of our commitment to field building, and to advancing our two core focus areas.
Prior foresight or forecasting experience is not required, but you should have a strong interest in foresight or structural AI risks. TFI conducts rigorous research with the goal to publish in academic outlets, and previous research experience is necessary. Graduate level academic research experience is desirable, although demonstrated rigorous research experience outside of academia can suffice. We would like candidates who are able to work independently and manage a research project with only intermittent (e.g., bi-weekly, monthly) meetings. Experience in empirical fields, statistics, and computer science are welcome, but other backgrounds may be acceptable for the right candidate (e.g., philosophy).
To be considered for the Research Scholar Program, please write a letter of interest, including a description of a project that you are interested in related to one of our core focus areas or that you otherwise think is a good fit for TFI. You should submit that letter of interest, along with your CV or resume, to info@transformative.org by November 24th.
